Sight words make up 75% of the words found in beginning reading materials. There are sight word lists for each grade level. Many of the first 200 sight words do not follow phonics rules and cannot be sounded out. Becoming familiar and learning Sight Words helps students to become effective readers and gain confidence as readers. Learning to decode words and memorizing words that "don't play fair" is important for initial reading skills, fluency, and comprehension.
